Clocks Falling Back: Can it Affect Your Driving?

shutterstock_132553109Yes, it can! While we’re all looking forward to the clocks falling back this weekend, there are some effects it has on pedestrian and driver safety you’ll want to be aware of.

For many, the daily commute home will be darker that it was before. It can be harder to adjust to driving more in the dark than you thought, and you’ll likely be spending more time driving in it! Evening activities and errands will most likely be during evening hours.

Be sure to take the time to check your mirrors for any pedestrians or cyclists who may not be accounting for the change in visibility for drivers, and to be extra aware as darker conditions can affect peripheral visions and overall awareness of what’s around you!

It’s also a great time to top up on windshield wiper fluid for when weather conditions will further affect visibility. Furthermore, give all the lights on your car a test to make sure you are noticeable and that you will be visible to other drivers on the road. Before pulling out of the driveway or parking lots, make sure all your exterior lights are on and take an extra look for pedestrians.

Small steps and precautions, as well as general awareness of how less natural light can affect your driving, are some of the best measures to take to keep safe on the roads!
